Gardening Practices & Techniques

This workshop will provide participants with foundational knowledge and hands-on experience in creating and maintaining an organic, regenerative garden or farm. Attendees will explore essential practices such as soil preparation, planting techniques, nutrient management, composting (including vermicomposting), irrigation systems, and holistic approaches to gardening.
  • All proceeds will support the Los Angeles Leadership High School garden programs.
  • The session will begin with an introduction to the farm, offering an overview of garden beds, irrigation systems, trellising techniques, and the current selection of seasonal plants.
  • Participants will then engage in practical activities, including soil preparation, nutrient enrichment, and planting, with guidance on utilizing appropriate tools and methods.
  • Attendees are encouraged to bring their questions about personal gardens or any related topics for discussion.

About

Francis River is a community organizer, farmer, and educator. His work is rooted in building community and sharing in nature. With over a decade of experience, Francis has worked across diverse agricultural landscapes, including large-scale organic market farms, small urban regenerative farms, school and community gardens, and greenhouse and hydroponic operations. His impactful work extends to supporting organizations that serve the unhoused community by growing food and teaching gardening skills. Currently, Francis is pursuing a degree in soil science and regenerative ecology while working with Ave 33 Farm to advance sustainable agriculture and community engagement.

Ave 33 Farm is a thriving urban farm located in Lincoln Heights, Los Angeles, committed to nourishing the local community through sustainable practices. Established in 2018 by Eric Tomassini, the farm grows fresh produce for over 140 families weekly and supports critical initiatives, including the Los Angeles Leadership High School garden and local mutual aid organizations. In addition to producing high-quality, accessible food (including accepting EBT), Ave 33 Farm offers educational programs that empower individuals to connect with the land and learn sustainable farming techniques.

- Introduction to Basic Gardening Techniques:

- Take-Home Plants & Vegetables:
At the end of the workshop, participants will receive a selection of plants and freshly harvested vegetables to take home. These are perfect for kickstarting your garden or adding to your existing setup, giving you a tangible and delicious reward for your learning experience!
